	Monsters attack your animals randomly and their attack doesn't depend on their current HP (they can attack fully even with 1 HP). Your animals also attack randomly until you explicitly aim their attack to a specific enemy ~~(or until this enemy dies)~~. So, in general, you should aim your attack to weakest (low HP) monsters first, so that ~~as the time passes there are less and less~~ monsters ~~left~~, and your animals get less and less hits. (If you attack the hardest (high HP) monster first, much time will pass until it dies, so other monsters will have more time to hit your animals~~). There are some exceptions though – for example Tornado in Volcano (because they kill quickly~~).
